The Phenomenon

We had an interesting phenomenon happen around here yesterday. As the remenants of Hurricane Ike moved through our region it collided with a cold front and went from a tropical depression to a tropical storm. This storm moved over 900 miles of dry land and then turned back into a tropical storm. We have several trees down and a lot of people out of electricity. All of the schools are closed, which the kids like. All of this from 25 mph sustained winds with 60 mph gusts. It has disrupted our lives for a couple of days.

I have a friend who lives in Sugarland, TX ( a suburb of Houston) and he said Saturday they had 50 mph sustained winds. That's twice what we had, so I can't imagine it. We are disrupted for a couple of days and we had 1/2 what he had. Makes me feel awful lucky. This is also 1/4 the wind they had in Galveston and we had no water to worry about. The Dublin family was even lucky for around here. We only lost power for 6 hours but my parents and numerous friends are going on their 24th hour without power.

It is an inconvenience for us, but we can't complain because we'll be back up an running smoothly today or tomorrow. People in Texas will take a lot longer.

If everything goes smoothly today, I'm off to watch the Ryder Cup practice round tomorrow in Louisville, KY.
